1921-P VAM-41A Pitted Lower Reverse

revision, October 12, 2009 by Brian Raines
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.
41A IV 24 · D1a (Tripled Left Stars, Pitted Lower Reverse) (189) I-3 R-5
Reverse D1a– Raised dots in tail feathers, arrow feathers, around wreath bow and left side leaves from rusted die. No polishing lines on lower reverse. (Formerly VAM-1A)

1. Earlier die state doesn’t show pitting around E DOL or polishing lines is now new VAM-41. The former VAM-1A is now VAM-41A and the die state with many fine lines is now VAM-41B. A few VAMmers that are fans of the 21-P VAM-41 series insist that the 41A (major pitting with no polishing lines) is much scarcer than the 41B (heavy polishing lines).
2. Be sure to check VAM-1E and VAM-3E as they also have pitting around the wreath bow like 1921-P VAM-41
3. VAMworld has a 1921-P Pitted Reverse Attribution guide here

Note: The bottom border of the pitting stops on a relatively straight line and even appears to make a predictable pattern of pitting clusters.
