1900-O VAM-9 O/CC Centered, Shifted Right, Doubled Date
Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.
9 III2 6 - C3g (Doubled 900, O/CC Shifted Right) (189) I-4 R-7
Obverse III2 6 - Doubled 900 in date. 9 doubled at top inside of upper loop. Both 0's doubled at top inside.
Date set further left than normal and slanted with 0's higher than 1.
Reverse C3g - Mint mark centered and unpright, punched over CC. The CC mint Mark is centered and shifted right under the O and shows as a thin broken curve on the left and two faint projections on the right.
1. The O/CC dollars were created when discarded dies from the then-defunct Carson City mint were reworked, and used in New Orleans for the 1900-O dollars. The remains of the CC's were not well eliminated and they can be seen below the O mint mark. Ten different VAMs are known with O/CC reverses: VAM-7, 7A, 8, 8A, 8B, 9, 10, 10A, 11 and 12. VAM-9 was considered the most desirable variety at the time the Top 100 book was printed and is a legitimately tough coin to find, especially in mint state. Since that time VAMs 7 and 7A have turned out to rival it in rarity.
2. The 1900-O/CC VAM-9 is one of several O over CC coins. These VAMs include 1900-O VAM-7, 1900-O VAM-7a, 1900-O VAM-8a, 1900-O VAM-9, 1900-O VAM-11 and 1900-O VAM-12.
