1889-O VAM-1A1 Clashed Obverse t, Reverse Partial E & M, Early Die State

This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.

Obverse III21– Slightly doubled ear at lower right inside. Clashed die with partial incuse t of Trust from reverse showing in right hair vee of lower hair edge. Late die state show radial die crack between BU in PLURIBUS.
Reverse C3a– III O mint mark set very slightly high. Clashed die with weak partial E from LIBERTY on obverse showing below eagle’s tail feathers on left side. Top crossbar, upper vertical bar and middle serif show. Early clashed die state of later full clashed E. Bolder than VAM 20A partial clashed E and set slightly further right. Partial raised designer’s initial M from obverse shows between d and W of God We.

1. This die pair was known as the VAM23A until de-listed and identified as the EDS of the VAM1A Weak "E" Reverse. This is from an AU speciment that has been cleaned. The "E" is stronger than shown in this photo for uncleaned specimens..
2. The EDS of the VAM-1A series is the VAM-9 Die 2. Leroy decided to not change the VAM number for the 1A, as it has been used for so long.
3. The BU Crack exists on the non-clashed VAM-9 Die 2

Die crack between B & U of Pluribus on Obverse that acts as the die marker to identify this VAM from the similar weak "E" VAM 20A.
