1888-O VAM-1B1 Die Break Dot, EDS

Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, March 2006.
1B1 (revised) III2 1 · C3a (Die Break Dot, EDS) (181) I-2 R-5
Obverse III2 1– Die break from denticles thru dot between E-P, but not yet into field in front of Liberty head nose. Earliest die state of Scarface die break variety, but with much less premium price.
Reverse C3a - Long die scratch thru AMERIC. III O mint mark tilted right.

1. The VAM-1B also comes in an early die state (EDS), which has a few stages, including this one where the break stops near the dot between E and PLURIBUS

The 1888-O VAM-1B comes in a number of stages, most of which are early die state (EDS) coins that are not "Scarface". Most of these EDS stages are worth much less than a true "Scarface". Before you buy a coin that a seller claims is a "Scarface", please do your research so that you know what you're really getting. The link to the VAMview issue that has the article on the Harrison Stages of the 1B is [[2]]

Another closeup image of an 1888-O VAM-1B EDS. This coin is not "Scarface". Quite simply, there is no scar through the face:

The way to tell or define the H1 stage of the 1888-O VAM 1B EDS is the die crack does not extend past the dot between E and PLURIBUS to the naked eye, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, the die crack DOES NOT have a die BREAK between the 2 denticles. The H2 does. It starts as a small triangular break and develops to fill the void to the top of the denticle.
Below is a picture of the H1 crack:

Here we have the Harrison Stage 0 and may be an early die state of that even. The die gouges around the lettering are bold and raised as well as have texture, so they are not polishing lines as seen in on the H-1 and H2. The clashing is just AMAZING!! no other word comes close. The Neck has a very slight "N" nick with no break by the dot. The reverse well I think I see an Light "E" on this and the positioning is right. All around the Eagles Head has a Halo of the Hair that my photos due it no Justice.

lease note that the coins in the two slabs shown below are not "Scarface". These are the early die state (EDS) of the coin that becomes Scarface. They are collectible but are worth much less than a real Scarface. Even though one of the slabs actually uses the word "Scarface" on the slab, the key is still the word "EDS".
