1887-O VAM-22A Doubled Eyelid & Stars, Pitted Reverse

Discovered by Jeff Oxman, December 1997. Revision by Larry Eakins, May 2010.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM
22A(revised) III218 · C3a (Doubled Eyelid & Stars, Pitted Reverse) (181) I-3 R-6
Reverse C3a– Raised dots of die rust pitting that starts at olive branch end and progresses to below tail feathers.

1. This multi-feature VAM variety features a distinctively pitted reverse between the tailfeathers and the wreath bow. The VAM 22A also has a doubled eyelid and doubled left stars. Even after 14 years of being a Top 100 Morgan variety, the VAM 22A is still elusive. Please note that this VAM was formerly known as the VAM 22, only recently being distinguished from its mother die, the now "new" VAM 22. Please note that as of 5-14-2010 an early die state VAM 22 A has been reported.
