Obverse III2 1 – Clashed die with partial incuse s of Trust from reverse showing in right hair vee of lower hair edge. Long die scratch thru B in LIBERTY up thru wheat leaves.

Comments:

  1. Clashed die with partial incuse s of Trust from reverse showing in right hair vee of lower hair edge. Long die scratch thru B in LIBERTY up thru wheat leaves. Second 8 has die chips in bottom right inside of lower loop. Both loops of 2 are filled with shallow raised metal from die chips and flakes with polishing lines.
  2. The discovery of the 1882-P VAM-1D3 resulted in splitting the existing 1882-P VAM-1D into three unique varieties.

A partial incuse s from Trust can be seen in Liberty's hair above the vee.

A long die scratch runs through B of LIBERTY.

An additional diagnostic for this coin is a raised vertical line to the left of the designer's initial. Possibly caused by a die gouge.

2013: The 1D1, 1D2 & 1D3 are under review as they appear to be different die marriages.
The top of Ms. Liberty on this type shows clash marks normaly seen with an "E" clash..So keep your eyes open as this type has had the reverse die swapped out.

Update:
An EDS specimen has been located and the reverse does not appear to have been swapped, both obv. and rev. show extensive clashing.
These dies are in the pre-polishing stage.
