1880-S VAM-10 8/7 Crossbar, Doubled 188 & Reverse Legend

Discovered by Ted Clark, February 1969.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.

Obverse III2 6 – 8 re-punched over 7 in date. Second 8 has a few small dots at top within upper loop. Horizontal line shows at bottom of upper loop curving slightly up on left side. Raise metal on right inside of upper loop. No raised metal inside 0. Doubled 188 with 1 doubled at top left and very bottom. First 8 slightly doubled at top inside of lower loop and second 8 at lower left outside of upper loop.
Reverse C3q – All legend letters doubled slightly in radial direction. Motto letters doubled at top. Right and left wreath doubled slightly towards rim. Very large centered VI S mint mark tilted left.

1. This VAM is one of several 1880-S overdates and is considered the hardest to locate but is a vam but has many known high-grade examples as of 10-25-14. The evidence of the overdate can be seen inside the top loop of the second 8 of the date. A small line is at the bottom of the loop.

VAM-10 also has the large S mint mark but the key attribution feature is the crossbar in the date.
