1880-P VAM-9 8/7 Stem, Doubled Reverse

Discovered by Ted Clark, December 1968. Revison June 1999 by Herb Zepke.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM.

Obverse III2 8 – Second 8 has raised metal on right side of upper loop and bottom loop has faint outline 7 stem with raised metal at top right. 9 doesn’t show in 0 but it has a bulge at 10 o’clock. Doubled 1 at very bottom and first 8 doubled at lower left outside of both loops. Second 8 tripled at lower left outside of upper loop. 0 doubled at left and right top outside and lower inside. All left stars and motto letters doubled near rim and all right stars tripled near rim. Late die states show short horizontal die break on lower rear edge of jaw.
Reverse C3b –Slightly doubled and tripled wreath leaves towards rim. AR in DOLLAR slightly doubled on left side

1. Same reverse as VAM-1 Die 1, VAM-9, VAM-37. The reverse progression is VAM-9, VAM-37, and VAM-1 Die 1.
2. One of several over dates in 1880-P Morgans. The '7' is clearly visible under the date as shown below. Available in high grades up to MS65, recently getting premiums on the levels of O/CC coins.
3. Obverse Marker: Polish line running from bottom of lower Phrygian Cap up to bottom Cotton Leaf
