1878-S VAM-57 Long Nock Reverse, S Set Left

57(revised) II 23 · B1d (Long Center Arrow Feather, S Set Left) ( ? ) I-5 R-7
Obverse II 23– Eyelid doubled at bottom front and short spikes at eye bottom front and lower part of eye socket.
Reverse B1d– Small III S mint mark set slightly left well below wreath, with slight tilt to left. Die marker of small die chip at lower right outside of S mint mark and small die chips in field below S mint mark.
1. The key to attributing 1878-S Long nock coins is the clashes, spikes and marks around the eye, as well as the mint mark position.
2. The eye marks are faint on this coin, but are highlighted on the image to the right.
3. The II 23 obverse is also used with VAM-26 and 60.
4. Other Long Nocks include VAM-26, VAM-27, VAM-56, VAM-58, VAM-59, VAM-60, VAM-62, and VAM-72.
