1878-P VAM-115 Tripled Blossoms
Discovered by Leroy Van Allen, December 1965.
This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM and This coin is a Top 30 1878 Variety
115 II/1 17 - B2a (Doubled Date) (194) I-3 R-6
Obverse II/I 17 -Doubled IBERTY in LIBERTY with left shift. Doubled NUM in UNUM and doubled date. All stars doubled.
Tripled right edges of cotton bolls,same obverse as 1878-P VAM-198
1. VAM-115 has many doubled obverse features. The lock-in feature is the tripled obverse blossoms in Liberty's hair above her ear. The date is also doubled to the lower left along with the 1 and 7 below their crossbar. Many stars are also doubled, especially the first two to the right of the date. Tripled blossom 1878 coins are all rare. The "King of VAMs", VAM-44 is a 7/8 tailfeather coin, this VAM-115 has a short nock in the center of the arrow feathers. This VAM is tough to find and a great find in conditions above XF.
LVA Plate Photos:
VAM-115 has triangular hub defect between the upper arrow feather and the olive branch.
Look for metal inside the lower loops of the 8's. Since it's a protected area, it's visible on low grade coins:
Lump in the T of Liberty.
