just won this 80 p

Post by JASONKFLO » Sun Aug 02, 2020 5:25 pm

just picked this one up. Nice looking coin . I picked it up due to all the clashing. I will get more pics once she arrives but does anyone have some possible vam's I should start looking at or narrowing down to based on these pics? thinking there may be some clashed letters in there at neck and back of cap but may just be the lighting on the coin.

Most dates have a "Sort by Clash" or some similarly worded link in the list of additional guides. I would go there first.

Of the clashed 80-Ps, the 50A is in the top three that I see most often. It can be found in MS-66.

For serious potential for an E clash transfer there should be eye visible clash transfer in the field along the top edge of Liberty's cap and a cotton blossom transfer between the wing and the arrowheads. You see that, and definitely look for a partial E. Phantoms are more often die wear, contact marks, or tone variation.

Are there any E's known without (or very little/faint) cap clashing? 🤔

The 1878 P VAM 84A has very faint if any cap clashing.
I have a 1884 O VAM 30A that has cap clashing but no "E". It is a phantom "E" for sure. Maybe the early clashing die state might be visible for the "E" reverse. ;)
I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

1884-O VAM-7 also has cap clash with no E.

I don't remember(could be wrong) the 80-P VAM-33A or 1887 VAM-1B having cap clashing.

Won't swear that everyone would agree with what is in the Scorecard, but it does demonstrate basic attributes.

Very nice chart Alan.

Just to be clear, I was referring to the strong obverse clashing above the cap that is commonly seen on clashed Es.
Sorry if I wasn’t clear before.

I’ll definitely get some better pics once she arrives . It’s hard to make out any details besides the main clashing I’m seeing .

That needs to go. VAM 50A does not have a clashed E. "Phantom E" has always essentially meant, "I want to see an E there, but I can't point it out or photograph it, and nobody else can see it, either." If someone can actually get a decent picture of an E on the VAM 50A reverse, the coin should go to Leroy for a revision.

Thanks John . This one will be coming to you at some point haha along with the others . A lot of the coin details are washed out on the photos . If this one had a clashed e I’d probably drive it over and hand deliver it haha. I’ll be curious on this coin what other things are going on once I can get better look at it.
