1886-S - VAM 2 or 4 or...

Post by Phil from OKC » Sun Jun 28, 2020 7:41 pm

I have this 1886-S Morgan that has what appears to be a messed up mint mark. It looks a bit like a doubled S, but I'm not certain if it's a VAM or just a bad mint mark.
Do any of the experts here have any ideas or comments?

I see a shade of a latent serif on the upper right and lower left of the mm - but I cannot see the split on either serif - my eyes are not that great though, I would have to really zoom in on it to see if there is a split. If it were a VAM, I believe it would be a 4 - but I cannot tell for sure.....and, I am new.

Jared123, you're in the same boat as I am. I'm new to VAMing and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. I kind of see the same serifs that you see on the top right and bottom left. I'm leaning toward the 4 also, but it may just be a mint mark with a blob. Thanks for your input.

It looks more like VAM 4 to me. It doesn't look like the outside/top right or outside/bottom left of the S have enough 'stuff' going on to be VAM 2.
When in doubt... don't.

Not VAM 2 for certain. VAM 4 usually has a thin crack from the point of the bust that passes just under the first left star.

There definitely is not a thin crack from the bust to the first left star.
You said there usually is a crack. If there's not, does that eliminate the VAM 4 also?
If so, then I've just got a messed up "S" mint mark!!

Here are four additional pictures of the S mintmark.
They still are not very clear due to
  • shooting thru the slab
  • using an iPhone
  • my lack of skill with close-up shots :geek:
Do these help some in determining which VAM it is?

Any faint repunching at the bottoms of the 1 and 8?

vampicker, No there is no repunching, faint or otherwise, under the 1 and 8.
Also, there is no thin crack from the bust to the first left star.
It's beginning to sound as if I just have a badly blobbed 'S' mintmark, right?
