FINALLY, the elusive 78-P V123

Post by rsk » Thu Mar 26, 2020 10:43 pm

Picked it up off eBay last week. Looks 40 or higher. Doesn't look cleaned although the high points are shiny.

Obviously a lighting snafu with the scope

Sorry, but I'm not seeing what you are.
These are the key PUPs for a 123:

When in doubt... don't.

I agree with Dennis, I don't see it as a 123. It looks like a long nock to me.

Yep, it's a VAM 30.

The 7th left star got me. With some wear, the 30 looks like the 123.

Then I noticed the denticles filled with gunk and thought I saw an outline of the gouge thru the gunk.

Image

And the R's on both the 30 and 123 are 99% identical.

Image

That was the 'proof'. So much 'proof' that I missed the obvious, it was a friggin' LONG NOCK!

Isolation has just started and already I'm seeing mirages.

Thanks... (dream squashers)

When the definition of 'evil mimic' sets in, it sticks. The coin that does it for you has enduring value.

The opposite happened to me once.
Was going through a dealers stock once and he said "just make sure you keep them in order, I'm really particular that way!"... I was in the 1878-S section and came across a REALLY NICE long nock!
...It wasn't until I went through the "want" pile at the end that I noticed it was a P... a VAM-33.
Of course it wasn't all bad, what ended up as a 63 PL wide reeds was in that pile too! :D
I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?

Which VAM?
When in doubt... don't.

My V123 pick was an extraordinary bit of luck. I was at Mobile, AL for the state USTA tennis tournament, playing at 3.5 level. Visited local shop after matches about 20 min before closure. Went thru their 78-Ps, and it was the second or third coin raw coin I looked at; finished looking at the remainder of the 78-Ps and bought it for $35. I gave them a cash sale right before closing, thanked them and went back to the hotel. It’s in a PCGS XF 45 holder now and still proudly part of my 1878 set. Other prizes are out there! Good luck with the hunt!
