78-S -- new VAM-51 die 2

I feel VAMs are going to be somewhat absurd if new die combo's cease to become new VAMs. Obviously it's Leroy's party, and he can do as he pleases, but I can't help but feel that this VAM-11.2 trend is muddying the waters (since it's supremely arbitrary and can go either way and often does). Not to mention I feel it risks making an already technical and somewhat obscure hobby look a bit highfalutin and silly. Again, I know Leroy can do as he pleases. Just my 2 cents.

And congrats on what used to be a new VAM but is now a new die pair! /facepalm

Two different obverse dies. They each are paired with the same reverse. Why not two VAMS? Can anyone explain this? I would appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Exactly. They can be and often/usually are new VAMs. ...Unless some unknown quality exists that I am unfamiliar with. If I'm not mistaken, it appears to be entirely arbitrary - i.e.: if Leroy thinks the coin is different or unique enough that it warrants a new VAM designation. But if I'm consistent with that logic, then we can eliminate a hundred or so 21p scribble VAMs. Or at least I tell myself that so that I can still secretly can cling to that hope.

I've never been accused of being a critical thinker. But I am a serious collector of specific VAMs. As long as there is a catalog that I can reference its all good for me. I was just looking at a coin on line and couldnt find pictures on the page. The link brought me here. A V-51 Die 2 seems to be a rare bird. Doing a little research I discovered(pun) the DC coin was sold at HA and I'd guess Lewis would be cool if the Full Coin Pictures were on the page, with proper credit.
Is the new 78S Guide out yet ?

Leroy's rules can be puzzling at times. This is such a time. I'd have called this VAM 115, as mentioned earlier, but it's not my call.

I have two DCs that are die 2 or 3 coins. They are only known examples and it stings a bit. But the bigger picture is a complete catalog of varieties so others may have as much info as possible.

Thanks Lew, I'll have to dig out my V101s and look them over. I have 8ish. Wonder If I ruled out V51 die 1 and went the lazy route. I picked up a few coins that will fill empty holes.
The plate photos dont show the chips on the neck very well. The HA full coin pictures do and are super clear. . Wonder if Wayne could add full coin pictures. he would need the link. I let you decide if you want the pictures on page. tiny
