Rim Error 1887 O
Rim Error 1887 O
I have this 1887 O that has some missing reeding. The second reeding shot shows that the reeding is recessed (or poorly struck but then becames more clear towards the bottom. It looks to me like it was struck off center as the north side of the obverse rim is thicker than the south. Has anyone seen anything like this?

The last photo is the one of greatest interest - is this the first recorded edge cud?

Broken Collar errors are a thing. Not sure if this is one or not tho. Patiently awaiting the Fount of Knowledge @vampicker to drop in on this threadevensocome wrote: ↑Fri Sep 25, 2020 3:41 pmThe last photo is the one of greatest interest - is this the first recorded edge cud?

Re: Rim Error 1887 O
i have numerous collar cuds but this does not appear to be one. maybe a defective planchet.

Re: Rim Error 1887 O
it does appear to have a collar clash on both sides. or it could be a misaligned with a collar clash. and the planchet may be defective. the collar may be chiipped(partial reeds). hard to tell.
Re: Rim Error 1887 O
Yeah, a broken collar looks very different and it's kind of a shame to put it in a slab - hides the effect. I'd think this is an early strike from a collar clashed die. See the other thread I bumped up. Now picture that die not being able to push outward the way it's intended to because of the pictured damage. As die wear makes the collar clash fade, the reeding would return to normal.

Re: Rim Error 1887 O
I am new to error coins, is this something worth getting attributed by pcgs? Would they straight grade it or would i need to go through their mint error program? Thank you for clarifying it makes a lot of sense with the picture of the clashed die.

Right. It was a throw-in on a Carr sub (which ill share as an OT thread soon) with the 10+ for $10 free ship special. The non-edge view gaskets slipped my mind. Im gonna crack it and just keep the label with it and when I sell it down the road I'll just sell it with the label to give perspective buyers confidence in both the grade and error type. But, yeah, it was a headdesk moment when it came back for sure haha.vampicker wrote: ↑Fri Sep 25, 2020 7:14 pmYeah, a broken collar looks very different and it's kind of a shame to put it in a slab - hides the effect.
