1879-p Morgan - Having trouble VAMMING this one ...

Post by jgrinz » Sat Feb 15, 2020 4:43 pm

I am stuck ...
Date doubling
Die Chips in both side of the hoops in the 8
Tears from liberty's eyes ( Chips ? )
Double Profile Forehead to chin
Bulge Left wreath top leave cluster towards the eagle wing
Two extremely long die scratches going through the most of the neck through the hair
and becoming three or four scratches at the right side of the picture. Interesting
hair "D" markings also

Crack between statES -> OF with what looks like a combination of double lettering and machine doubling
Chip in G of "GOD"
Some double stars with a crack going from the neck to star one to the left
Minor starting crack head towards the 1 in the date

Unfortunately I don't have the time to dig in beyond the few I know very well. But I can offer a few tips / suggestions.
Mark Witkower and VamPicker have studied this series very closely., so if you need the heavyweights, perhaps we can call on them.

The bulge on wreath is from a clash event. The doubling of 9 you see is classic for 1879 and occurs on many '79 VAMs. Doubled profile occurs a lot too.

Two common diagnostics areas to photograph for 1879 are polishing lines in LIBERTY and polishing lines in the tail feathers. These will help once you get closer, and may allow you to eliminate a number along the way. (disclaimer - that's true for die pairs, but not die classifications).

If haven't you may want to double check the tear is not post mint damage (PMD), and the star doubling is not reflection. You probably know, but just in case, if the tear is raised, then it's a chip or gouge. If it's a divot, then it's most likely PMD.

Cool looking coin! Lot's of interesting things.

Hi Jgrinz.

Over the past couple years, I’ve been involved in documenting/researching this particular series. After reviewing your coin, it is a Late Die State (LDS) VAM 35. The third picture that you listed with the diagonal polishing line to the lower left of Liberty’s eye and last picture with the two parallel polishing lines running through Liberty’s neck and hair are unique to this VAM.

The photos that are currently listed for this variety unfortunately don’t highlight those features. Additionally, the coin in the VAM listing (obverse) has a PL surface and does not display the die chips around the “8” that are found on LDS specimens.

Have fun and keep up the hunt!

Mark

You're doin' well if you had this at a possible v35 before Mark chimed in. Congrats. Your VAssiMilation is now complete

The profile Cap and stars and wreaths lead me somewhat to 35ish :-)
though the doubling is somewhat minor in this state

After 106 coins of my Morgan set … I think I have been indoctrinated.
I have 7-8 that are not done as they were not easier ones …
This was one of those.

Thanks Guys
