1882-O/S VAM-5 EDS in AU Details NGC slab?

Post by TheYokel » Sun Feb 16, 2020 12:22 am

What would a fair market average value be for a Details grade?

Coin can be seen on the boards here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1717&p=15061&hilit=Eds#p15061

Still worth a small premium, even if it's been cleaned, eh?

Thanks for the guidance,

Short answer: Not a huge amount.

The EDS version is undeniably much tougher than non-EDS, especially in Mint State grades. But VAM 5 is a coin that starts out with less total market demand because PCGS, for example, holders it as "weak" and non-VAM collectors seem to focus on "strong" examples. There's even less total demand for EDS versions, which are largely only sought by VAM specialists. Then there's the issue of details. How many collectors want one when there is not an extreme shortage of problem-free examples? My opinion is that demand for EDS examples in any grade is relatively low.

Here's a list of prices I have for AU straight grade coins. I'd pick the grade that fits your coin, pick a value that seem reasonable for it, and then cut it in half for a details coin. And keep in mind that what holder the coin is in tends to matter a lot.

1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 NGC Jan-10 CS $300
1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 PCGS Feb-16 E $281
1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 ANACS Sep-10 VQ $186
1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 PCGS Dec-13 H $176
1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 NGC Jul-09 H $138
1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 ANACS Dec-15 H $129
1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 NGC Jul-15 H $129
1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 NGC May-13 H $123
1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 ANACS Jan-15 H $106
1882-O/S 5 EDS 58 NGC Apr-15 H $100
1882-O/S 5 EDS 55 ANACS May-13 CS $230
1882-O/S 5 EDS 55 NGC Jan-15 E $100
1882-O/S 5 EDS 55 ANACS Feb-15 E $75
1882-O/S 5 EDS 53 PCGS Jul-13 H $188
1882-O/S 5 EDS 53 PCGS Jul-13 H $176
1882-O/S 5 EDS 53 PCGS Mar-17 H $124
When in doubt... don't.

First, Thanks or posting this EDS & Dennis for pricing & resonse to post.

I probally have more O/S coins in my collection than most can imagine

I recently sols 1,000 AU/XF examples to a telemarketer & stil have some 1500+ examples

EDS vam 3,5= About 10-15 yrs ago these were super rare with few surfacing and if so,
comanding quite the money. I sold a PCGS au58 vam 5 EDS for $2300 and a vam3 EDS
in 58 for $2650.

At the time i believed these EDS AU'S would reach $5k in value. As time went on just the opposite
happened and they fell in value and collector appreciation.
I just sold a vam 3 EDS & vam 5 EDS in ms63

A true dis appointment, as population numbers suggest their a true rarity especially in MS.

Meh. I'll keep it forever at those prices. :?

Thank you for that detailed (rimshot) breakdown. That's insane how undervalued they are...

What happened to Morgans? Did the market move to singularly chasing grades over variety rarity?
