1878-s VAM 49 "funky feathers"

Post by Jayyk31 » Sat Jan 25, 2020 11:10 am

I see in the description on the Vam page it's an r6? Does theis on have any premium over the regular value? I picked this coin up raw a few days ago over the internet. So curious what value was raw in AU 53-55 with PL surfaces? And then if it was slabbed? Thanks!

Like just about any VAM with even modest collector interest, certified examples of VAM 49 sell for more money than raw coins, since the time, postage, grading cost and hassle have already been taken care of. PLishness in lower AU grades also becomes pretty much irrelevant, and can be mistaken for cleaning or altered surfaces. These are all of the previous sale records I have in AU50-55. CS stands for a sale that was made at a coin show, and I know which dealer sold the two coins whose prices are multiples of everything else. That firm somehow manages to sell VAMs at crazy high prices, but I would ignore them as being representative of the true VAM market.

1878-S 49 55 ANACS May-12 CS $150
1878-S 49 55 ANACS Dec-13 E $68
1878-S 49 55 ANACS Dec-13 E $66
1878-S 49 53 ANACS Feb-12 CS $130
1878-S 49 53 ANACS Dec-13 E $62
1878-S 49 53 raw Feb-18 E $42
1878-S 49 50 ANACS Jan-10 H $36
When in doubt... don't.
