1883-O VAM-1C3 EDS or 1C2 ??

Post by vincar73 » Thu Nov 29, 2018 3:25 pm

I've just picked this nice 1883-o VAM-1C and would like to know your opinions if this could be a VAM-1C3.

I knew the 1C3 is quite rare but looking in SSDC registry there are just 2, 1 VF-25 and another AU-55 detail.
So is the 1C3 ultra rare??

I'd be inclined to say 1C3 on that one. VAM 1C2 shows no crack there at all, the coin pictured on the VAM 1C3 page is probably VF, so the break is accentuated by wear more so that in would be on your cleaned AU. I wouldn't bother with an "EDS" on this, as there is definitely a break to look at. Especially if there are only a few coins known, it seems silly to effectively have a different die stage for each coin.

Yeah, it's a weird wavy break and once it starts the progression is fast. This is solidly a VAM 1C3. Helluva nice find - makes me want to vacation in Italy.

Thanks all for comments.

Sometimes it happens to be lucky......I saw this coin on the bay for normal buy it now price. I wasn't sure it was a 1C3 but i was sure it was a 1C... paid it and waited to receive it... once i received the coin ...surprise.....it was another 1883-O but not the 1C i was waiting for...i messaged the seller and told him it wasn't the correct coin and I told him I would give him negative feedback and he replied that it was his mistake and that I could send it back and receive the correct one or keep the wrong one for 20 euros and he would send me the correct one...i kept the wrong 1883-o and paid the 20 euro and then the seller sent me the right one.....and it was the right one :) :) :)

I would like to invite you all for a VAM Meat-n-Great here in Italy but don't even think to come hunt VAMs on this other part of the world

In the lower reverse, how you could see in last pic, there is something like small dashed lines (between E D of ONE DOLLAR). Are these signs of cleaning??

That stuff is actually in the planchet and wasn't fully struck out when the piece was coined

Thanks John for explanation.
