Walt's 1886-P
Walt's 1886-P
Can anyone help Walt identify his 1886-P?
Re: Walt's 1886-P
let me know if I should try to resize the photos.
Re: Walt's 1886-P
Thanks for your help Lee (and patience). My original quandary was for a critique of my photographs. As I studied my pics, I realized that the condition of the coin appeared to me to be at least 60, maybe higher. Finally, it appears that the reverse die crack marks are not a match for any of the current 86p vam varieties. If anyone wants to chime in, it will be greatly appreciated. Picture quality? Grade estimate? Vam #? Thanks, Walt
Re: Walt's 1886-P
Far date, high 6... Vam-8?
Can't see the ear or UNUM to know for sure?.
Grade is a very pretty 62? Had some distracting marks all over the cheeks/bust but the reverse is excellent...
Edit: just noticed the cracks on the other side. VAM-8 says it's fairly generic other than the cracks in UNUM, but I don't know enough to know whether they would be a unique feature or not?
And there's always the 99% chance I'm wrong about the # anyways lol...

Re: Walt's 1886-P
Hey Yokel, Thanks for the comeback. At 20X I can see a small crack above UN of UNUM. Major rev cracks above UNITED and AMERICA. Some stars appear to be slightly doubled. It definitely has the Vam 8 date, but what about the cracks?
Re: Walt's 1886-P
I am but a noob, sir. You will have to wait for help from someone else for that one.
You really don't want to go down my rabbit hole...

I too am a resident of noobville, but thanks for looking.
Re: Walt's 1886-P
Looking at the coin again, it actually looks like there are denticle marks in-between the actual denticles and the crack. It also looks like a really deep coin... Collar clash caused the crack?...

Re: Walt's 1886-P
REV looks V19 and it's listed as a far date?...

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my.........Ah........Uhm........something, something, something.....

Re: Walt's 1886-P
Yokel, Please explain "looks like a really deep coin". My wife sometimes refers to me as being deep.
Re: Walt's 1886-P
Kenny, Thanks for looking. Did you look close enough to grade my picture quality, or to formulate an overall grade opinion for the coin?
Re: Walt's 1886-P
It could be the angle of your photos, but the left side of the planchet looks like it's more recessed than normal? Probably just the photo, but it's how my eyes were digesting it..
Kenny: would that make VAM-19 and VAM-8 the same die pair?
Walt: check your stars and your "86" in the date for doubling, like pictured here.

Re: Walt's 1886-P
Looks like all stars, incl rev, are at least slightly doubled. Can't see the doubling in date, but could be there.
Re: Walt's 1886-P
Ant,
VAMs 8 & 19 can't be the same die pair.
The dates are in different locations.

Re: Walt's 1886-P
VAM-8 on top and OPs coin in middle with VAM-19 on bottom.

I think VAM-19 is the better match to be honest. I'm betting he's just not recognizing the date doubling?...
~~
~~
And I've spent 20 minutes staring at a date now... And i have to ask...
I realize we don't make the rules, and everything is subjective to one opinion...
But this is VAM-8 and the site wiki for dates...

~~
~~
How is that not listed as Very Far?... VAM-8 is on the bottom...
It's visually farther than "Far Date"...
The more i figure out... The more confusing the little things get... Lol

Re: Walt's 1886-P
8 is listed as a Far Date, and it is just to the right of the third denticle.
19 is not listed as a far date and is just to the left of the denticle.
It's sort of right at the border of near/far. LVA makes the call for listing the date location.

Re: Walt's 1886-P
19 is listed as Far in the comments just not the title (like a lot of things I overlook lol)
Edit... OP, i know you said you didn't see doubling, but your pics are too low res for me to zoom and see...
Check your "86" for these curved lines on top of the numbers... That would basically lock the VAM in?...

Re: Walt's 1886-P
Near and far is talking about how far right of the bust point, not up and down from the denticles.
Re: Walt's 1886-P
Comments are just that, comments from VW members. It is not the official listing by LVA.
Re: Walt's 1886-P
Ah gotcha. Did not know that. Thought they would be attributed to the member. My bad, thank you
