for my part, i'm not saying it is real or fake but fwiw, there are quite a few error coins out there known for struck through whatever with the whatever piece residing with the main part. pretty sure i've seen dozens at least AND i've seen at least a few smaller denoms struck through larger denoms as well. so there is plenty of precedence.

i think the crisp diagnostics of the marriage lean towards at the very least, the half being legit. the surfaces seem a bit odd for such a state of preserve for an item that was obviously sat aside for 150+ years.

i wonder if it appears in some vintage auction catalogs where all the coins are raw.

for some of the "absurd" errors out there that exist and there is no shortage, even into classic coins, a lot of them can be trace to very old auctions and that for me on the authenticity side only, gave me a sigh of relief. (i won't go any deeper as this gets into some incendiary territory with esoteric errors)

glad you shared this piece twohawks, whatever the result. :)

the major errors guys at pcgs/ngc boards would probably love to see this piece and MAY have had some experience with it. just tag them unless you are just submitting the piece for authentication. although one can argue, it is a neat convo piece raw.

This statement caught my eye ,, fueled my curiosity almost..... the topic coin on this thread could be considered by some very inner circles as an esoteric error perhaps like what @vampicker hinted at , Done on purpose ... I do not say that lightly...I .Really wanna know how the verification process turns out . It might get called counterfeit for what ever reason. Who really knows how the corporate machine operates . Does this kind of submission carry the 1% charge on assumed value after grading ????That bothers me BTW, gives incentive to cheat IMHO might be better to charge a flat rate for services rendered , just sayin...

As far as the color , i can only guess the half dime has been handled a lot more , and differently than the half . heck who would not have wanted to play with that . take it out, put it back . take it out, put it back . and so on for over 100 years

Very cool piece
And very interesting!
That being said, something about it bothers me,
As it looks like an extremely well made
Very deceiving garage made (error)

Will be interesting to see the result. Before it was submitted, would have been nice to see the half with a half dime placed on top of the obstruction area for comparison of size. Also, how does the thickness of the obstruction compare to a half dime. I realize photos can make it hard to make comparisons, but the obstruction appears to have spread out to the size of a dime of that era. Thickness would then be thinner for a half dime if it had been spread out. Perhaps a half dollar planchet was drilled out and the obstruction set into it prior to minting the half? Just my 2 cents worth of opinion, or is it 55 cents worth. Good luck on the outcome, neat coin(s). Thanks for posting them here....... I have also been following the thread on the Coin Community Forum as well. It can be found here..... https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/top ... _ID=438894

I'd have to think that encapsulation means it's real, but I suppose it could mean "we're putting it in a body bag."

Encapsulation is the next step in the process after grading. If nothing in the submission is to be encapsulated, they're done immediately and forward it to QA. The sequence of steps is unaffected by the details of any given submission, which is logistically simpler at the scale of PCGS's workload.

I'm assuming the poster meant it went to encapsulation and did not cross. Same thing happened to me once.

The coin / Coins are now in Quality Control. John B has it correct, if you send in 1 coin and it fails to cross or with errors if they determined it was not real it wouldn't have gone to encapsulation, it would have been done. Had I sent in 2 coins or more and one failed the submission would continue to be run through the process.

As this order is one coin and is submitted as an error with no grade requirements had they determined it to be a fake or a post mint manufactured "error" it would not have been sent to encapsulation.

It is now sitting in Quality control after encapsulation.

As I have had this in my hand and looked at in long and up close, I have no question that the error is real.

Just stating what happened to me recently. My coin was a crossover that didn't cross and was never encapsulated, yet it sat at encapsulation for a few days before going to QA. I was very excited.. then extremely disappointed.

Hope you have a great outcome.
