Wow! That is studied coin. Most interesting thread...vampicker wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 3:51 pmI can't put my finger on it, but something about this piece bothers me. I'd suggest matching it to a listed marriage before sending it out.

an added plus. I gleaned some insight into @UNCLE BINGOs next camera purchase.

Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
@iwillbenice are you thinking both pieces when you say that ? or just the dime?

Russ,
Real vs fake?
I’m not an expert, so I can’t say for sure one way or the other.
🤪 It sure is odd (and super cool) if real 🤪
I sure hope it’’s real.

Russ,
What was your first thought when you took a look at this coin?
Any bladder control issues?

The dime slug on the reverse was done by expert with a lot time on hand.

maybe?Maybe not I'M not sure yet , because if you were thinking the half was a fake we are in big trouble . In the age of 3 D printers and space telescopes

Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
The half legit but doctored by a pro back in the days.
Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
LOL Well the reed count is right, the weight of just the half dollar is right, the half dime scales correctly, and the diameter is spot on, the obverse and reverse show no sign of any tooling or pressure. So let me get this right, someone pressed a piece of metal a few millimeters deep into a coin without damaging or distorting the obverse or the reverse and diameter of a real 1860 O Seated Half dollar?
Thanks John, for the PDF of the Seated Half Dollar guild, this coin is real!
This looks to have all the hall marks of a "Mint Worker screwing around" back in the day.
Later today I will shoot an image on the coin in a flashlight dome so everyone can count the reeds.

Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
you answered my next question about combined weight equals both coins ., before I asked it . IF that thing is real its better than pockets on a shirt by a long ways
really wanna see the back of the half dime to see if it matched the small relief in the void of the half .

Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
whaddya think. wb-2. clash lines at liberties drapery. only a few mm are tucked up that far, at that angle.
Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
I'll go along with that WB-2 does look like a good match. Having a known die pair on this thing goes a long way with authentication. Still have reservations but they are not as strong now

Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
Have the parts of the coin been weighed to confirm that the planchets involved were the right weights?

Definitely an unusual pair.
From the pictures, it looks genuine to me.

Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
John, the weights are correct, and the reed count looks right. What's kind of funny is I had this half as a WB-2 before that thought was added.
Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
The biggest thing that bothered me is this looks deliberate rather than a product of random chance. But that doesn't mean it's fake. If it is a deliberate clandestine mint product, it would have been made for a collector. That goes a long way in explaining how the two pieces stayed together.
Still not on board with the color, but I might have a different reaction if I saw it in hand.

Here are the images I had to take to prove to my shipping insurance company the nature of the item being shipped.
No color corrections and my lighting make's the items look a bit darker, all I did was crop the images.

Re: Interesting Seated Obstruction Error
The correct weight of a real seated half is 12.4 grams, the correct weight of a half dime is 1.24 gram's, with a combined weight of 13.6 gram's. That is plus or minus .04 gram's normally. BTW I think this is a WB-3 not 2 as the date has a much thiner top of the "8"
