1880-P I'm stuck - Help or suggestions please

Post by Dirtdoctor » Tue Aug 31, 2021 5:00 pm

I have run the list of 1880's over and over and can't assign this one. Please offer any suggestions.

Salient points

Obverse -
Doubled or machined second 8 on top
Doubled 0 inside lower right and bottom
Apparent clashed s in Hair Vee
Possible checkmark remains on second 8
Polishing between features all over - cotton bolls, hair, LIBERTY, under ear and in ear, etc. Does not show well in pics.
Rough bottom on neck
No visible clash at chin/neck

Reverse -
Clash or double clash Wing-n
Clash under "st" of trust
Disconnected leaves from over polishing reverse

Pics here and on second post to follow.

There aren't many with the pincers on top of the 2nd 8. Maybe VAM 19. Is there pitting between ONE and DOLLAR and/or a strong polishing line at the right side of the upper serif of the L in LIBERTY?

Thanks for responding. The pincers on the 8 were one of the main features I hunted for, because they are strong and clear on this one.

I see no pitting in the ONE DO area, and nothing around the L in Liberty.

VAMs 15 and 49 have an 8 that looks like that. Don't see the break on the lower cap of VAM 15A/B, but there's similar clashing present.

Thanks for suggestion. I took a closer look, and got out the better photo gear. You can see the obverse polishing around the cotton bolls and leaves, and in the hair, a little better in these pics. Still trying to figure out how to get pics as good as others do.

I don't think either of those work...For V15, I don't see the cap break, and the date doubling is not the same. For 49, I don't see any of the Die Markers listed present.
