Back from LVA - VAM kill 1900-O VAMs 64 &64A, New VAM 58A

It was a simple task - or so I thought. Nobody had updated the 1900-O VAM sorting index listing pages on VAMWorld since 2018. New discoveries made since then were missing from the sorting, and there were some with notes suggesting possible duplication. The sorted indexes make searching for likely VAM candidates much easier. So with an abundance of time with a covid lockdown on a few rainy January days, I thought I would venture back into fixing up the coding on those pages to bring them up to date. So I printed up a master list from the main page and started the process of elimination by checking off VAMs to find any missing entries.

After adding a few missing VAMs, I came upon VAM 64 and VAM 64A. It turns out VAM 64 and VAM 64A were discovered separately by two different VAMmers in 2018. VAM 64 wasn't listed at all in VAMWorld and no full coin photos were available, but VAM 64A was listed and had a referenced VAMWorld post with Leroy's VAM 64A discovery letter in it that mentioned the VAM 64. I traced that letter back to Roger Beckner. so I contacted Roger Beckner, the discoverer of the VAM 64A, and asked if he had any pictures he could email me. Better than that, Roger turns out to be a great VAMMER interested in detail and he loaned me the actual discovery coin so I could examine and photograph it. Imagine my surprise upon examining the coin in hand, it turned out to be a LDS of the VAM 58, a coin that had been the subject of previous VAM revisions.

Now some of you may remember, in May 2013, the VAM 58 got listed, but it was actually a duplicate listing of the original VAM 14 coin. At that time, VAM 14 (revised) was listed from a coin sent to Leroy by Nico Marcus way back in 2009. But it turns out the original VAM 14 was a different coin. We finally got that all straightened out with Leroy in Dec 2013, after the VAM 14 and 14A, VAM 35 and 35A and VAM 41, 41A and VAM 58 revisions (all related) were established. Leroy swapped the VAM 14 and VAM 58 descriptions before the 2013 update was published. Because of this, I still credit Nico with the discovery of the VAM 58.

Have you got this all straight yet?

But now, here in my hand in 2021 was a late die state VAM 58 coin again with two new listings, the VAM 64 and VAM 64A.

It occurred to me that back in 2013, I had submitted both the currently listed VAM 58 with the originally listed VAM 14 to Leroy as part of the correction effort to the listings. So I dug out that coin and a copy of Leroy's letter attributing it as the new VAM 58. I told Roger about it and he decided he should submit it to Leroy along with his discovery piece VAM 64A for resolution. So I loaned my information and coin to Roger for submittal.

The results are now back from Leroy and Roger has returned my coin with a copy of Leroy's new letter . Leroy has agreed with us that a duplication had occurred and he eliminated the VAM 64 and VAM 64A and created a new 1900-O VAM 58A.

Roger Beckner is now correctly the discoverer of the New VAM 58A, but a few years late.

Thank you for your persistence and hard work on this date. The next time Roger sends a batch in, he should include the former VAM 64A so I can update the holder. Great work

Congrats... and thanks... to both of you for your persistence in cleaning up those listings.
When in doubt... don't.
