Gents:
We have a silver dollar of date 1885 with unmilled edge; it is pronounced good by the
bank but not finished. What is it worth, and how could it have gotten from the Mint in this
condition?
Please let us know by return mail what you can give for it. It is in very good condition.

The mint's reply, if there was one, might state the cause.
Normal procedure in 1889 would have been to replace the coin.

Sound like an 1885 pattern (AKA -Snowden dollar)
Re: Letter about error Morgan dollar - 1885
What is the registry of how many known examples exist? Peace Roy
Re: Letter about error Morgan dollar - 1885
That crossed my mind, also. Snowden's experiments included raised lettering on the edge. He used equipment and instructions obtained from the mint in Belgium. His correspondence does not mention producing any plain edge pieces.
