1878-S Top 30 Complete Set

Post by alefzero » Sat Feb 06, 2021 9:54 pm

It was requested that we run a complete version of this set at the SSDC Registry. I immediately set it up then. That was a few days ago (the 3rd). Added it to the MOTD for the Registry after that. I am thinking people just are unaware. So if you are among those who wanted this set, it is there in the Standard Sets just below the regular 1878-S Top 30.

I may expand the categories of the sets to make finding them a little easier, like a Clashed category. One of those things that has barely been changed at all over the decade of the Registry.

Great, but why add 78-s Vam 11 that Doesn’t exist?
I was the person who brought back from the dead and reincarnated the 78-S Vam 10

Easy enough to drop that from the set. The bigger question is whether we should drop 10 and 11 from the Registry. There are a number of still listed VAMs that we have handled that way with the view that if one actually does arise, we can then add it, but there is no such expectation. I have one like that in front of me. It was holdered by ANACS ages ago as 1879-S VAM-20. It is now VAM-73 and I would bet there is no such thing as VAM-20 and the original listing was the 73 coin, just that mint mark positions and and orientations were not as systematic in the book days.

Ah, yes. I meant 11 and 12, not 10 and 11. Anyone have a convincing case for 12? I will drop VAM-11, but would like to do VAM-12 at the same time if appropriate.

The OB II 8 progression is Vam 109, 100, 65, and 10.
No clue regarding Vam 12,
Another Sr Vammer and I were at FUN 1/20 and saw at the Larry Briggs table a 1878 s attributed as a Vam 11 in a Larry Briggs holder. We asked to see it and both of us agree it was actually a Vam 77.

Thanks for dropping the Vam 11. Seeing the Vam 12 is not tied into the Top 30 or the new expected list of
Top 30, let’s see if anyone has done research to it’s existence.

Nuked the VAM-11 in the Registry a while ago. I think the VAM-12 should also go, but some consensus among those who study the date more intimately than I do should come first.

Seeing I’ve now been asked twice about this expanded 1878-s top 30 set,
I had nothing to do with adding it to the SSDC list of Sets.
Now that it’s up and running, I just wanted to help clean it up with the killing off of
The Vam 11 which doesn’t exist.

Nuked VAM-12 in the Registry too.

VAM-2 remains for now as three people still have them registered (Pete, Tim, and Rob I think).

Let those who have vam 2’s present their proof that it exists and is not another improperly attributed vam.

Can move the three to unattributed 1878-S, but will give time, I guess, for each to review their coins.

We killed the VAM-2 in the Registry too. The remaining two were changed to unattributed 1878-S.

I think purging the 78-S VAM-11 and VAM-12 leads me to believe that some think that Leroy’s description and photos in the 2nd and 3rd edition of the VAM books can be ignored.
Granted there has not been any 78-S discovered so far that meet the description for VAM-11 and the photo for VAM-12.
The description and photo should not be ignored.
Those of you who favored purging VAM 11 and 12, -- what is your opinion of Leroy’s description and photos?
