Morgan 1921-P VAM-1BA === VAM-1Z

Post by Kissov » Sat Jan 30, 2021 12:35 pm

Morgan 1921-P VAM-1Z has a characteristic set of scribbles outside the eagle's right leg feathers, a wide loop plus some scribbles close in to the feathers (this is illustrated on the VAM-1Z page).

VAM-1BA has an identical set of scribbles, also shown on the VAM-1BA page.

VAM-1Z also has the left wing polishing line (shown on the VAM-1BA page).

This example of VAM-1Z is just beginning to show the cracks at S of STATES and the right wing tip.

Which later develops into this (on a different example of VAM-1Z):

One of my copies of VAM-1Z also shows what is described on the VAM-1BA page as a "Clashed G":

What none of my examples show, but which is illustrated on the VAM-1Z page is a scratch from the S in STATES to the denticles. An identical scratch is also shown on the VAM-1BA page.

My conclusion is that VAM-1BA is an EDS example of VAM-1Z.

I have two bright, but late-ish die state VAM 1Zs... or at least that's what I've always called them. SInce 1Z comes up first in the list of attribution pages, it's entirely possible that I never made it to 1BA – which I coincidentally do not have an example of.

My best coin for photographing has the right cracks and it has scribbles. It also has the line from the rim to the first S, although it's weak:

When in doubt... don't.

I suspect you are right about stopping at 1Z and not proceeding further in the scribbles guide. I'm sure that is what I did.

Nice that you have an example with both the crack and the S to rim line.

My copies show the tiny gouge at the right wing tip, which shows up on your photo.

Interesting! I agree that the VAM 1BA appears to be an EDS of VAM 1Z. Hopefully someone with nicer examples than mine can address this with LVA. I don't have a 1BA, and both my 1Z are LDS / post clash / no clear sign of any of the die scratches.
