Morgan 1921-D VAM-1DD === VEDS VAM-1AU

Post by Kissov » Wed Jan 27, 2021 8:35 pm

The discovery coin for VAM-1DD is proof-like, so likely struck very early in the die's life.

Here is an example of what I called Morgan 1921-D VAM-1DD.

The scribbles match (although the scribbles photo on the 1DD page is very "busy").

My example has the characteristic scribbles outboard of right leg feathers.

And it has the scribbles on the right wing's outer feathers.

It also shows the peripheral die scratches, especially conspicuous around the E and R of AMERICA.

But I don't think this is VAM-1DD anymore. Stick around for why.

My "1-DD" has the beginnings of a crack in the eagle's left wing.

I happened across an example of what I called 1921-D VAM-1AU, but without the gouge in the N of ONE.

The scribbles area of this example is worn, but includes a few elements that match VAM-1DD (VAM-1AU does not list scribbles). While it lacks the scribbles outside of the right leg feathers, it does show the scribbles on the right wing's outer feathers.

This example shows the characteristic die crack in the left wing, extending to the F of OF.

It also shows the development of cracking around the date consistent with that of VAM-1AU.

Interestingly, it has the remains of the peripheral die scratches around E and R of AMERICA.

I conclude that VAM-1DD is a VEDS of VAM-1AU, that the gouge through the N of ONE happened late in the die's life, and that my two examples lie in between.

Do you have a faint collar clash on your VAM 1AU as described on the VAM 1DD page?

The first example does, adjacent to the second and third right stars (It is in an ANACS holder).

The second example does not show the collar clash.

It's weak enough that wear would wipe it out pretty easily. Nothing that should be cataloged separately, merely mentioned that it's there on some.
