I got this coin at a local auction and believe it to be a VAM-4.
However, I'm a little confused about the VAM page description.
“One might be inclined to call this worn coin VAM-2, based on the position of the 1 in the date. However, the center ellipse of the upper loop of the 9 has a major axis that points along the left edge of the 6 denticle to the right of the neck point, whereas the same for VAM-2 points to the right edge of the 5th denticle. “

Re: 1896-S VAM-4
Check the ear and 1 for VAM-10 while you have it in hand... That S looks a little higher set on VAM-4?... Hard to tell...
If you can't find any markers, it would revert to a plain V4, regardless of the reverse though right? MDPME?

It's coming...

Re: 1896-S VAM-4
I would rule out VAM-1 as it is not a near date.
VAM-10 appears to have a date that is slightly nearer than mine.
I don't see any of the markers around the ear on VAM-10.
