1878 P Morgan VAM-163 but what appears to be a broken D on the reverse.
1878 P Morgan VAM-163 but what appears to be a broken D on the reverse.
I have this 1878 P Morgan Silver dollar and while I know the obverse is VAM-163, the reverse has the broken R in TRUST but can find nothing about what appears to be a broken D in the word DOLLAR on the reverse. This may be something completely normal but when in doubt, ask the experts.

Re: 1878 P Morgan VAM-163 but what appears to be a broken D on the reverse.
I collect die varieties, mainly Lincoln cents. I could really see the argument for PMD. However, if it were PMD, where is the misplaced metal at the bottom of the D?

Don’t have access to my specimens; looking at a couple of photos from HA this site, bottom of D may be a little shallow, but nothing really noteworthy. LDS 163 is 2-sided clashed. Lots of subtleties don’t get mentioned in LVAs summary and many don’t make it to pages here. Anyway, the obv U w/ broken r are the p/u points I use.

The lower left of the D is damage. The lower right is a little notch on the D that's in the die, so somewhat broken. Mine is like this, as well, as I assume all are.

So you have the 1878 P VAM-163 that has the same D on the reverse? If yes then you’ve answered my question in that is a common to this particular coin.
Re: 1878 P Morgan VAM-163 but what appears to be a broken D on the reverse.
Both my 163 have the semi-broken D just like you have (but without the dig (damage to the left)).

Thank you! I am glad to know that it is common for the reverse. It
