I won a Gold PCGS Set Registry award!

Post by DHalladay » Fri Dec 11, 2020 3:33 pm

OMG.

Even though my set still lacks 1 coin, someone at PCGS recognized that the 1565-1571 Scotland Ryal (30-Shillings) set is so crazy difficult that I've been given a Gold Set Registry Award for 2020. :o

The set is so hard it has taken me 18 years to find 7 of the 8 coins that are needed. It is so hard that the combined total number of coins that PCGS has graded for all 8 dates and types is just 31.

Here's a link if you'd like to take a look at the set and some photos:

Wow! Congrats big time! Cool that PCGS went out of their way to recognize a more obscure set. 16th century date run sets are few and far between for a reason. I actually have a 1571 on my want list for my Prime Number set (1567 is also prime, but I have a French Ecu d'Or in that slot). Do you use SixBid.com to look for these? They're a pretty good aggregator if you're looking for world stuff. I've found a few coins this way. For example, this one that's coming up in January that's get you 2/3 of the way to filling your 1568 slot

That's a gorgeous coin John, but it's also teasing!

Ryals come in 10, 20 and 30-shillings denominations and it seems like whenever I've encountered a 1568 coin (not very often) it's been the 2/3 Ryal. Sigh... 1568 is apparently the key date and I may have to go to England to find one.
When in doubt... don't.

Great set of some tough and historic coins. Can't help but notice the one hole in your set is pop zero.
often the crusher of hopes and dreams

You might want to see if you could have a British dealer bird-dog one for you.

Great set. Well done. I have a question that I hope isn't too ignorant, do you know what the counter stamp is, if it is a counter stamp. :?: Thanks.

It is a revaluation counterstamp in the shape of a thistle. The 1570s were a time of rising inflation in Tudor Britain that saw bullion values increase significantly, and in 1578 the government called in silver coins to be stamped and revalued upward. In the case of the 30-shillings Ryals, their value rose to 36 shillings and 9 pence (36s/9p), an increase of 22.5%. But this wasn't entirely free money... people had to pay a huge fee of 4s/3p to get the counterstamp. Ryals can be found without the revaluation mark. Personally, I believe one reason Ryals are so scarce is many were melted and sold as bullion, so as to capture more of the increased value instead of paying 2/3 of it as a revaluation fee.
When in doubt... don't.

It pleases me to learn how diverse and accomplished our members are. Every shared achievement is motivation for me to do more.
My left handed pencil collection may not be worth sharing, but I very much enjoy reading about other's successes.
Well done Dennis. Thank you for sharing.

Great job, I knocked a guy off that had four gold awards straight and PCGS only gave me a blue.
