Best Place to Keep My Little Treasures

All the fires we had recently has me questioning whether my little treasures (Silver $) are safer at home in my home safe, or tucked away in the bank safe deposit box.

In the (hopefully unlikely) event our house burns down, I don't think our home safe is rated to keep silver from melting - advantage bank.

On the other hand, if we are home and have a little warning, I can take them with me - advantage home safe.

The bank safe deposit boxes are inside a massive vault which may well protect the little darlings if the bank burns down - advantage bank.

But the bank is in a flood zone - advantage home safe.

For security reasons, I'm not asking anyone to say what your choice is, but if you were me, where would you keep your VAMs?

(I would have posted this in the O/T Oregon Fires Thread, but it's locked.)

I go with bank boxes.
Depends on value of coins.
Big collection there is no way to keep at home.
If someone knows you have collection and sticks a gun in your face you will open safe and hope the leave before they shoot you and family.
Big bank boxes are 60.00 a year.
Well worth it to me.

Well, I'd send them to me! You might consider option#3, buried. As long as you are careful
about when you are doing it, if you have neighbors close by. It will protect the stuff as
long as it's a least 3 feet down. Access would be an issue.... hypothetically speaking,
I *might* have done something similar with some 90% junk silver. Even if everything
burns down (Yes, I live in Oregon) I still have markers that will survive. The other choice
IMO is a better safe with a higher fire rating. Don't like stuff in banks and out of my control.

I wouldn't worry as much about the coins melting as I would the plastic around them melting and wrecking them.
You could do what the Rabbit does and just carry them all around in your pocket.
Also, note to self, JK lives in Oregon and has a yard and in that yard is buried treasure... let the games begin! John, if you hear any of your neighbors complaining about phantom holes appearing in their yards please report it here, that way I'll know I'm getting warmer!

I have a fireproof safe good for about 3 hours which is about all you can get I think without breaking the bank. Once you get a sizeable collection there is no bank that has the space to house them.

I think a bigger question is how do you insure them against fire or theft?

Personally I feel having a good dog or two and a gun safe but my bed is good enough haha. Though my collection pales in comparison to most here I’m sure.

Collection size has a lot to say about the right answer. Safe deposit boxes at banks today, at least at newer facilities, tend to be sized for passports, letters and other similar thin paper items. If you have a collection that fills 10 PCGS boxes a safe deposit box big enough to hold them enough may not exist anywhere in town, let alone be currently available. Safes come in all sizes and with various fire ratings, but good big ones can be very expensive and they should be heavy, which is why getting them moved can be expensive. Making a decision on this topic should be neither quick nor easy.

I don't see why not to get a Big Safe if you carry a lot of coins, Guns and personal information. I have 3, a wall, floor an a stand up! It works for me!!!

My boxes are 10x10x20 inches.
Have 2 of them.
They will hold 18 0r 19 pcgs boxes with20 coins in each.
65.00year for each.
To me cheap since insurance is to high to even think about.
Years ago I checked cost of insurance and as I remember it was18.00 per 1000.00 of coins.
You had to keep track of coins every month.
Works for me. Thanks

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies! I moved everything to safe deposit yesterday. Took a little shoehorning, but everything fit into my 10 x 20 box. Marriage license might have gotten a little wrinkled in the process.

Minor problem, just don't tell my wife.
