There are a lot of coins that are struck through many objects. Every year and mint has them. If you study it closely you will see it. More of the fun in collecting coins.

Striking errors like that don't have VAM numbers. VAM numbers refer only to identifying dies. If you could post a picture of the strike-thru, we'd like to see it.

Re: 1896p morgan struck thur string
A strike-thru error is caused by foreign material (sometimes string) between the die face and planchet when the coin is struck. This debris (string) will always leave a depressed area on the coin. The ends of the string depression often display frayed, spread out fiber impressions. Striking errors are most interesting because of the wide range of possibilities. Roll searching has turned up struck-thru string errors on Ike dollars and Kennedy half dollars for me.

Very nice strike-thru error. As is the case with most errors, it is likely unique, as the string would have either moved between strikes or was embedded in the coin for some time.

Unusual shape for string -- could also be a wood fragment, thus accounting for the long straight edge.

is this coin worth keeping or should I sell it? I don't think its wroth much it dosn;t have a vam classafion. don't know where to find what it might be worth can anyone tell me where you can find a price guide for vams?

Re: 1896p morgan struck thur string
Like Messydesk said, it is unique. A lot of searching for previously sold "strike through" coins may help you.
Re: 1896p morgan struck thur string
There are people who collect error coins and it does have value as it is a MS62. Far more value than say a XF of a common vam. If you like it, keep it, if not, sell it. Do some searching on ebay for error silver dollars and note the left column for checking the box for sold items to see what they sell for. Make sure you pay attention to the grade as yours is a MS62, worth a lot more than lessor grades.Reddevil912 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 10:45 pmis this coin worth keeping or should I sell it? Re: 1896p morgan struck thur string
If you think it's cool and you like it, keep it. If you don't want to keep it, I would recommend listing it on eBay as an auction, since prices on errors are always hard to pin down. Search Heritage archives for Morgan strike thrus to find coins similar to yours if you want to guess at price. It's not the VAM number that makes this coin special.Reddevil912 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 10:45 pmis this coin worth keeping or should I sell it?
