1881 O vam 16 or 1J OVER POLISHED REVERSE

Post by bhinkle » Wed Jul 22, 2020 8:07 pm

I have an 1881 O PCGSMS62PL, that I was lucky enough to
find and buy, awhile back, because I saw some very interesting
abnormalities, on the reverse.
I think, because of the position of the O mint mark, it is a
vam 16.
Here are some pictures, what do you think?
Any help, would be greatly appreciated, Bert

Sunken reverse plus doubled profile is VAM 16. Quite rare, always PL. Congrats!

Thank you Mike.
Thank you John and I learned something new,
about it having a sunken reverse.
Would that be due, to the repeated or over polishing?
Thanks again, Bert

There was a thread a while ago related to proof $5 Liberty gold that contained references to an article by Chris Pilliod that discusses how this sort of effect can happen with polishing. Whether it's due to the die being too aggressively polished when it was first prepped or because the die was soft (this is actually a reason cited in a die usage log for 81-O) and collapsed where it wasn't work-hardened by the hubbing process, I'm really not sure. That it exists only PL and the VAM 28.3, which is a later usage of the obverse die is also available in PL with the same polishing marks visible tells you how fast the reverse was retired.
