O T BUFFALO NICKEL DDR

Post by bhinkle » Wed Jul 15, 2020 9:47 am

I'm hoping there are some buffalo nickel collectors out there and know
about the DDO and DDR varieities.
I haven't found any nice vams lately, but I just bought and received this
1934 PCGSMS64 today.
I bought it, because I thought I saw thickness, in the top of the O, in OF,
on the reverse and some of the other letters too, for a DDR.
Here are some pictures, that I just took of my 1934 and the link, for
pictures on the 1934 DDR page, to compare it to.
Normally the letters are uniform or the same thickness.
What do you think?
Any help would be greatly appeciated.
Thank you, Bert

Bert,
This error occurs when the master hub has part of the design doubled, which then transfers to the main die used to strike the coins. Coins struck with this die then exhibit the doubling. Doubling in considered a major mint error and normally has a much higher premium than other types of errors. Nice find!

@crabscape-this is not the result of a doubled master die. If that were the case, then all 1934 dies would be doubled. this the result of distension, and distortion of the working die between hubbings.
@bert-way to go on spotting that one. most people would miss it. i have another 1934 ddr that is very strong, and little known.

Brian,
So this is not a mint error?

Brian, You are correct! I just got educated on the hub doubling. Sorry for any led information that I may have caused!

WOW, This is GREAT.
I was hoping for some buffalo collectors, to help me.
Thank you John, Roger, Rick, Jimmy and Brian.
Now, while searching through my other 1934 nickels, I
found this unc one.
It needs a good soaking, to wash the dirt off of it.
Look at the O, in OF and some of the other letters, on
the reverse.
The letters are not like my other one and appear to be
just machine doubling, maybe?
What do you think?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bert

Looks like a mix of die erosion doubling and strike doubling.

Thank you John, Rod and John,
Luckily for me, the seller had very nice hi def photos, of the 1934 buffalo nickel,
which allowed me to enlarge the picture, to see that much thicker top, of the O
and the top/end, of the S, in front of it.
I could even see the 'smashed like' R, in PLURIBUS.
Pretty exciting for me. Bert
