1889O Rotated Reverse 68 degrees to right

Post by larryhellie » Sat Jun 20, 2020 6:44 pm

First time posting to VamWorld so please excuse the lack of technical knowledge on my part.

The attachments below are my feeble attempt to show the rotation of the reverse from the axis of the obverse (approximately 68 degrees).

I have searched the 1889O VAM list and could not find an example of a rotational mistake.

I see on your website there are professional photographers who apparently specialize in photographing and authenticating this type of coin. I would appreciate some input as to where, and how, I could have this done. (I live in Vancouver, Washington, USA if that would help.) If this coin is a rare as I believe it is then it should probably be cataloged by VamWorld.

My limited coin grading knowledge seems to indicate a very strong Good (4-6) and possibly a Good (8-10). I realize the photos are not the highest quality but at least should help some.

Reviewing your 1889O VAM list it appears this may be the only rotational miss struck coin in the series. I would appreciate some guidance on what my next steps should be. Of course, I would also be interested in estimated value and how to sell the coin.

Thanking you all in advance for your comments, guidance and suggestions.

Welcome aboard Larry!

Your images show more desk than they do coin: can you try again but get a lot closer? It would be impossible to determine a VAM with such small and blurry images -- although VAMs 1 and 3 are known with rotation amounts as large as your coin has. I would suggest you start investigating there.
When in doubt... don't.

I spoke to Larry, and we will get some more pics. I also asked him to post on the BST
side as to possible value. Can someone help him with that?

Thanks, John

Myself, personally, I would first remove it from it's holder and check to see if the coin is 'AUTHENTIC'. Would be a good start. ;)

I have that instruction on the BST board. I will redact that kind of info in someone's post if I run across it while browsing the boards.

There is not question the coin is authentic.

I guess I either don't understand your nomenclature or I can not express my question accurately. The entire reverse is 69 degrees to the central axis of the obverse, No minor imperfections, no cracks, no crushed letters. Just an obvious 68 degree full rotation of the entire reverse relative to the obverse.

If I search the Wiki for "1889-O" and "rotated" (Wiki search function is a wonderful thing), I come up with VAMs 1, 3, and 9. They can be differentiated by mint mark and date position, which I can't tell from your pictures. When you see a range of rotation amounts, keep in mind that once a die starts rotating, it doesn't do so in discrete jumps, so you're likely to see rotations outside the currently observed range for a given die pair.
