1878 VAM 85 question

Post by sdaws6249 » Wed May 13, 2020 3:48 pm

How rare really is the 78 VAM 85.... I have been searching the wild for years and have not come across one.... I found a VAM 86... but not the 85....

Very rare. I only “found” one and it got away from me(the discovery piece was offered to me, but it was being sold as a vam 80 and the 85 and 86 were unknown so i assumed it was just another vam80). I repeat this story for anyone new who hasn’t heard it so they look things over carefully).

Both VAM 85 and 86 are crazy rare and very expensive. Since 2011 I have just two 85s in my sales database and just three 86s.
When in doubt... don't.

Very rare, indeed. I've only had a couple cross my desk of the VAM 85 and 86 combined. One was submitted as a VAM 80, and the submitter got a BIG surprise. VAM 85 is available uncirculated, but I don't know about 86.

VAM 85 is rare; I found mine unattributed in a GC auction. V86 is exceedingly rare; AU 58 tops the bill as far as I know. Mine is XF purchased attributed from a dealer. Both likely retired due to reverse die cracking, but I've seen worse. Go look at LDS V80. Good luck.

I was offered both a few years back.
Sell on here had them.
The 85 was ms 63 DMLP pcgs I think unattributed but he knew it was vam 85.
The 86 was net graded and sent it in again and got in xf 40 pcgs holder.
A lot of bucks but turned out to be good buy.
They are in my sets.
There is a ms 64 DMPL out there for top pop.
Yes 86 is au 58 top pop.
