I think I have seen this topic before but cannot remember the answer. When you see a Morgan and the label has "California" on it what collection is it from?

It's from the collection of the late Lloyd Gabbert (2008 VAM Master recipient). Lloyd was a huge supporter of VAMs and built several top VAM sets before the registry was around, as well as top-ranked PCGS registry sets.

Thanks and sorry I never had a chance to correspond with him. When did he pass away?

This post really goes to show us how time and the people involved in our beloved Morgan vams
really get lost, especially from EAST Coast to West Coast. Lloyd Gabbert was so well known but yet
many East coast vammers never knew his existence. Lloyd put more money into vams than anybody
i know, of course he was very wealthy, so everything in cont

Then my mentor & friend Gene Henry from Issaqua Wa, passes away , silently leaving some 115,000 ++
Morgans in his collection, of which Gene was a avid early vam advocate collector. I have many thousand
of his coins today, as we bought, sold, traded between us for many yrs.

Seemingly not many new youg collectors forthcoming, so it will be very interesting moving forward
in time. Lets hope new blood comes into this great sport and its massive history of the Morgan -its errors/
vams and the people who helped make its history.

This brings up a suggestion- maybe we need a Written Biograghy about each individual who
contributed to Vams/morgan $ collecting. All centralized in one designated place, for History and
valuable insight. Sure would be a great compilation that would tie in well with VAMWORLD

Just saying IMHO---- What do you members think?? of this idea??

I'm ahead of you, Scott, if only by a couple days. We're in the process of writing up some bios for the VAMMaster winners and adding them to the SSDC awards page I just set up, along with a head shot if we can get them. Lloyd's is one that will be ready first. They'll read like book jacket bios or keynote speaker introductions. It is important that people new to the hobby become familiar with what those we consider to be the "big names" did, in some cases decades earlier.

I think this is a great idea and perhaps VW is a good repository. You also bring up youngsters and that is one of my hot buttons. Finding the key to interest is a puzzler.

I had lots of fond memories hanging out with Lloyd, whether at the sacramento show, santa clara, long beach, other major shows, at his work, or at home. not to mention phone calls. he was very pleasant with everyone, and he did so much for vams that many will never know. I still remember his story about acquiring the 1878 vam 14.11 that ended up pcgs67. it involved his duplicate 1892s pcgs67. he bought a lot from me, including my 1880 vam 33a discovery piece. I just wanted to show it to him and initially resisted thinking he may have mistaken it for a v39a. he was determined to have it. woulda come in handy after Leroy delisted it. Lloyd was such a pleasant and sharp man.

One of the downsides of all the virus stuff is learning that I am considered elderly, perhaps very elderly. A bit like checking the obits and learning that everyone who died is younger than you are.

We all need to enjoy the time we have, and collecting Morgans is a big piece of the joy.

Guess I should post this in Lloyd's memory. A little piece of history so to speak, as others have done.

Bios on the awards page now include Lloyd, Mike Faraone, Logan McKechnie, and Bill Fivaz. Thanks @vampicker and @DHalladay for writing these up.
