1878-S VAM 19B or something else?

Post by DHalladay » Tue Mar 24, 2020 5:13 pm

PCGS holdered this as VAM 19 Torn Bonnet. But as I looked at it I noticed a LOT of polishing on both the obverse and reverse.

VAM 19B seems to fit best, but I don't see polishing on the LFCPs. So what should I call it?

I found my vam 19B Dennis and took some pictures.
I don't see the polish lines on the obverse, but they are strong on the reverse.
I hope this helps, Bert

Thanks for sharing your photos Bert; I think they help me conclude that my coin is a very late die state 19B.

If my next batch of 1921-Ps doesn't have a full 10 coins, I think I'll send my 19B along to LVA and see what he says.
When in doubt... don't.

Isn't the polish job to take out the clash from VAM 19B the very thing that creates VAM 19A. I'd take this as an early stage of 19A

Thanks John!
I hadn't thought of EDS 19A as a possibility; I assumed polishing came at the end of the life cycle.

But if polishing came first, how would clashing still be visible (with all polishing signs gone) at the 19B stage?

19B is the earlier stage You can see the polished down double clash on a 19A

Ah... another listing sequence where the A version isn't first.
That explains it. Thanks again.

Yeah, 19A was listed years before the VAM 19B. Not sure everyone agrees with the progression as I see it. In the moment I'm looking at pictures instead of coins in hand. Still, I'm fairly certain I've gotten this piece of the progression right.
