1900-O Morgan Sunken or shifted die?

Post by Griffdog1982 » Sun Mar 08, 2020 2:42 pm

Looking for help on exactly what it is I'm looking at on this 1900-O Morgan. 100% of the outer areas on both sides look shifted and sunken.

Yes, a bit of a "sunken die" effect and also near severe rim errosion due to die wear. Leroy actually listed something similar but more severe for me once when I was very new (something he tends to do to the shegrin of many) but I wouldn't send something with this effect in to him today.

And as an aside, I haven't been able to find a second and I've been casually looking for @fogie for a couple years...

Thank you Chris. I was pretty sure it was a sunken die but a second opinion never hurts. I really appreciate it.

Localized die fatigue. Might have been caused by dies not being exactly parallel and thereby creating excess pressure and stress at one side of each (near rim). If there was any sinking of the reverse die it would be masked by the steel stress.
