New 1900-O & O/CC - 4/4?

Post by Brabjohn » Sat Aug 11, 2018 1:48 am

Pretty excited to share this with you guys. Not sure which to be more excited about. The 38D is one hell of a clasher but the O/CC’s are some of my favorites. All comments welcome.

Thanks for the comments guys! The 38D is quite the clasher no doubt. Apologies for my LFCP’s, still haven’t mastered them. Leroy mentioned this possibly being the only listed clash with 3 letters at the neck obverse. Hard to think there isn’t another one, is it true?

Could be. Most of the G clashes I've seen are pretty weak, and the clash has to be quite strong to go that far into the field. Lee will probably chime in about this.

I feel the Vam 11A is a little bit of white noise but I’ve been starring at that dang crack/break for too long and I had to have Leroy put my curiousity to rest. The crack-to-break transition has been a tough one for me to figure out and the more I seek wisdom the more I realize it’s a tough one all around. Leroy put it at an R6 but I think it’s more common than that. The 38D on the other hand is definitely rarer than a R5, R7 would be my vote. Clash like that, if R5, would have been found before now IMO.

Brady,
When you showed me this coin about 6 months ago, you did not let on that there was "In" transfer.
I am green with envy.
If I knew how to post photos here, I would post a photo of how I looked when I first saw your 38D. Big old bug eyes.
Also, I don't ever pay attention to R rating. It's just a guess. Anyone's guess can be high or low.

Wow, Brady, you must live close to where all undiscovered 1900-O's live. Great find with the VAM 38D. I'm sure its very rare as all "G" clashes are hunted and this one could not have been overlooked before now if it existed in any quantity.

The VAM 11A listing is another nice find with which must be a very late die state example. The clashing of your VAM 11A caused that break. I sent an early clashed example to Leroy a few years ago, entertaining the notion that the clashing caused a weak 'n' transfer, which I believed I could see. Leroy declined to list that coin, stating that he was unable to photograph the transfer. So there may be another VAM 11 out there somewhere that has a stronger 'n' transfer. I Keep looking, but it's expensive to gamble on that without seeing the coin in hand first.

As it is a gradual transition, the line between crack and break is often gray, especially displaced field breaks close to the rim, which are often a result of die wear around the crack. To me, VAM 11A is a very minor listing - white noise, as you say. It will probably be difficult to differentiate 11 and 11A on many coins because of this.

The VAM 38D, however, is significant.

Lee, I guess I failed to mention to you any additional letter transfers thinking only about the G. I will admit I didn’t see the I transfer with the bag marks, as Leroy mentioned, in that area. Don’t turn too green, you might hulk smash your G clash set :)

Bigbub, the 11A is indeed a very LDS. I haven’t seen many clashed 11’s without the crack/break, so you’re probably right. I’ve looked for the N transfer you are referring to on a lot of examples and have never seen one I can decipher. I’ll keep looking!

Messy, I agree with your comments. There are some other cracks that start to form on the reverse of 11 in the very LDS that may help distinguish whether it’s an 11A. I’ll try to pin some down.
