OT; Counterfeit American Eagles

Post by ljs123 » Wed Feb 12, 2020 11:06 pm

I purchased a few American Eagles yesterday from someone I know, trust, and do regular business with.
When I got home, I looked at them closely. I called him up and informed him that two were Fake.
It's not a problem when you do business with a reputable person, and the person I work with is happy to make it right.
Just be careful.
I just did a quick search and found the exact Counterfeit (2003) that I have.

When I buy gold I stick to the US Mint, PCGS encapsulated, and/or one of three dealers I have used in the past. For me there is just too much money involved to take the risk.

I remember a few crossing my desk a couple years ago. IIRC they were pretty well done from a glance but when I looked closer the foot/sandal were horribly "off"

I have a fake maple around here somewhere. When my partner had his shop a guy stopped in to sell some silver. Hit him at the right time when he was dealing with a gold buy, the rest were real but about a half-dozen maples were fake. I had to take one home for the black cabinet of course. If I can find it I'll make a thread. For giggles..

Lee,
What did the counterfeits weigh?

Gold plated tungsten. Tungsten is the same density as gold, so the weight will be right. If you tried melting them, you'd melt the gold long before the tungsten, if you could melt the tungsten at all, as there is a 2360°C difference in melting point.

The zombie face on Liberty is another good indicator of it being fake.

Brady,
I don't have a scale, but the weight felt good.
Thank JB for letting us know why.
Just quickly seeing a few on a counter in flips, one can get fooled.
But it didn't take any time with a glass to see it was off. I could post lots of photos, but I wont make you suffer through many of my photos. But I will post a few to show how these fakes are off. In the bust photo you can even see the plating has pealed off. The first photo in each of the two sets are the real American Eagles.

The stars are totally different, aren't they!
When in doubt... don't.

Dennis,
Yes, the stars are very different. As I started looking closely, just about everything was off.
Looking with magnification, I think how could this ever pass. But the color, size, weight, and look is pretty good when you are looking at these with several real American Eagles on a counter in flips.
Or maybe it's just my old eyes. :)
