1888 S/S Morgan Dollar

Post by Raybel » Fri Jan 31, 2020 8:55 pm

I own a 1888 S Morgan which has been graded by PCGS as AU50. The certificate number is 38715695. The attached magnified image shows a double strike feature on the S mint, the letters E,D,O,L,L,A below the S,and portions of serif above the S and the upper right portion of the serif. Is this similar to 1888-S-VAM-11 S/S? Is this a new VAM?

Looks like a case of machine doubling, occurs during the ejection stage. Read this topic for info....viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2647

Unfortunately there is not a full picture of an VAM 8 - what you can see it looks like the letters are doubling up
though not described as so.
Check the stars on the obverse though that may help

I agree that the letters below the S mint mark should be the an ejection machining doubling but the S vertical/S exceeds the shift of these letters. Thank you for your response.
