1881-O VAM 1G

Post by HawkeEye » Thu Jan 30, 2020 5:37 pm

While working on my die studies I picked up on a little PUP on the reverse of the VAM 1G. The 1G has plenty of markers on the reverse but this one seems to be one we missed. Just above the eagle's right wing there is an area of pitting that extends into (or out of) the denticles. This can be seen in other denticles above and below the wing tip to a lesser degree.

Although I don't remember seeing this pitting on other dies, if we find it then die associations may also be identified. This feature was identifiable on all coins, even faintly down to F15.
