1879 O Doubled Die Obverse and Reverse
Re: 1879 O Doubled Die Obverse and Reverse
To all those who helped last year, this is a 1879-O Vam 31 Morgan Silver Dollar.
I sent it to Mr. Van Allen and was given a very lengthy description. I see no listings with pictures so that made it difficult. Thanks again. Deborah
P.S. I can't find anything on the internet about Vam 31's. Any idea of value at AU53.

Re: 1879 O Doubled Die Obverse and Reverse
VAM 31 is not considered to be a premium VAM for 79-O, so it wouldn't have any additional value. I'm glad you got this resolved.

@Only One glaD TO See you got some resolution on your 1879o. hopefully you are still looking at silver dollars and vams.
Re: 1879 O Doubled Die Obverse and Reverse
Could they use some of my pictures and post it with the Vam 31 description? If there were pictures with the description I may not have needed to send it to Mr. Van Allen. I could also upload his lengthy description if possible.

Thanks Deborah, for your persistence in getting your coin attributed correctly.
Yes, please upload your letter from Leroy Van Allen here and I will link it and this thread to the VAM 31 1879-O page.
I will also post your pictures to the page.
This site is a wiki collaboration after all and more information is better than less. In your case, you have the best information possible, a letter from Leroy.

Good to see a new Morgan collector asking questions and researching. The terminology used in your grading submission is not correct. In fact, errors or error coins are caused by planchet - die - strike mishaps.Only One wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2019 1:16 pmI tried it from every angle and mine does not have the curved lines inside the mint mark. It has a die crack but not in the same position. When I sent it in I asked to check for errors and all they did was grade it. Shouldn't they have at least told me if it was a VAM?
Thanks for your time Bert. Hope you have a Merry Christmas. No white Christmas here in southern WI.
Deborah
Vams are a "Variety" which involves a "Design Change" on the die itself that is transferred to every coin that is struck (by that unique die design).
Usually grading services charge extra for error attribution or variety attribution. Documentation is required for NEW Varieties. The distinction between "ERROR Coins" and "VARIETY Coins" is often overlooked and mislabeled on public venues like EBAY. Hopefully, this explanation helps you understand what happened with your grading submission.

Re: 1879 O Doubled Die Obverse and Reverse
I learned that, but my initial post is old and I wanted to keep all the information involved with it. Thank you for the feedback however.
Kind Regards,
Deborah
Also, I will see if I can scan the letter in.
