78-Ss picks
78-Ss picks
Picked 5 78-Ss today
1. V-1D1
2. V-6
3. V-18
4 & 5 I will need help with.
Looking at my 1D1, I found it interesting that my obverse has a polished out nose like on the LFCP on the 1D2 page. Can all of you with 1D1s let me know if yours has the full nose like on the 1D1 page, or if you have a polished out nose like on the 1D2 page?
Thank you

Re: 78-Ss picks
Yes, as mitch said, show the wing/body junction. Is it engraved, or non engraved wing? Is there doubling inside the ear?
Re: 78-Ss picks
My 1D1 (PCGS-63) has a polished nostril

@impairedsquirrel
@Mhomei
@vamsterdam
@vamnuke
Thanks Rob, Mitch, Brian, and Clay.
I will try and take the requested photos when I can and post them.
One thing that surprises me is that I was thinking a 78-S person would know the gouges in the field to the left of the bow right away. There are several of these gouges, but I will show a cropped photo that hopefully shows them better. They are raised and appear as die gouges. I do understand how a cut in the field can close up and look like a raised gouge, but it doesn't look like that to me. Please be blunt and let me know if you think that it is just PMD.
Thank you all for your comments and help.

Re: 78-Ss picks
Okay I took the photos that Mitch @Mhomei and Brian @vamsterdam asked for.
Does anyone know what 78-S VAM this is with the gouges to the left of the bow?
I do not see what I would call ear doubling.

Re: 78-Ss picks
Thank you. I do believe that 75 is correct.
So do you think that what I'm calling gouges to the left of the bow is really PMD?
Thanks again!

Re: 78-Ss picks
Im not sure. Never seen it before. I did find it very interesting. Reverse used on V55 & 75. Have many of both and never recall seeing it. Other might have, I have not.
Re: 78-Ss picks
Per the LVA 1878 S Morgan Dollar Attribution Guide there is a V-75 EDS, V-75, and V-75A.
The 75A is the Late Die State (LDS) with light acid treatment.
According to the V-75 examples I have only the V-75 EDS has the two die lines to the right of the eagle's right foot.

Re: 78-Ss picks
well, now that we can see the wing/body junction, that really changes things. now, does anyone else have a vam 75 with these die gouges, or are they well placed scratches/gouges?
