Are these Denticle impressions?

Post by Garymont3 » Fri Jul 05, 2019 7:21 pm

Hi,
I have been on Vamworld for a couple of years but I’m new to discussion boards.
I came across an NGC graded 1884-O that had some die clashing on the reverse. When checking the obverse I came across what looks like very deep denticle impressions across the front edge of Liberty’s ear. I didn’t see any mention of them on any of the denticle pages and it got me wondering if maybe I am wrong and they are not denticle impressions. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Those would be contact marks from another coins denticles.

A coin was sitting on its side in the bag on top of that coin, and a couple hundred pounds of coins during transport likely landed on top of it.

Hi Gary, that is known as a "bag hit." A relatively hard one at that but a classic example of the rim edge another coin slamming hard against that coin leaving triangular marks from the other coins edge reeding.

Hello Gary - in a way - yup they are denticle impressions - but they are from one minted coin to another minted coin. For it to matter to a VAMmer - it needs to be denticle impressions on the die that wind up on the coin. Your denticle "marks" are sunk into the coin - denticle "impressions" (in the VAM world) are raised on the coin.
