A strange occurrence...

Post by CascadeChris » Sun Apr 28, 2019 4:44 am

So, I picked these two rev of 79's up on my trip, unattributed, and put them both in the same flip. Just got around to attributing them and this happened. How strange, huh 🤔🤨

Kind of a daily double.
When in doubt... don't.

Right. I got about 6 rev of 79's and put them all doubled up in 3 flips and these two were randomly put into one flip. Sometimes it's the little things that make you go :o...

maybe if you had four slots, you might have put in a vam 2228, and v222a also.

Guys, can we put the words "Cap gouges" or something to that effect on the 228A page? That was the first feature I saw, the little meteor shower of small gouges in the cap line. Tried using the search bar for "1878 p cap gouges" and nothing. If those two words were on the page, it would have come up. We need to think about what words someone would put in the search box to find the VAM they're looking for for an easier find and put those words on the pages.. Agree? @messydesk @vampicker @PacificWR @LateDateMorganGuy et al whatcha think?

It depends on what catches folks eyes when they first look at a coin. Not everyone notices features that others do, even Leroy. Should I mention base attributes to start an attribution? I will leave the decision on "search words" up to others. Not trying to be confrontational, just reciting observations from my past is all.

One tendency might be to add tags to pages, but that would render them less readable and full of what the casual observer would see as a bunch of gobbledygook, and you'd still have to search correctly to find it. Don't do this.

What I'd recommend is adding an appropriate caption to images that already show what you would search for. I did this and searching for ""1878-P" cap gouges" turns up VAM 228A as the third VAM page match, even though I didn't literally say "cap gouges" in the text. The other benefit here is in giving a concise explanation of why someone is seeing a particular image, increasing the value of the existing content.

Here is an example of what I am talking about. I was in the middle of the 1904-O Die Study when this happened.

A coin was submitted to Leroy that he originally listed as the NEW VAM-13A for the very nick of a "n" clash". Think die classifications at work here. I had this coin in my collection at the time, but it matched the VAM-23A with the "pitting or rust" between BU of PLURIBUS. I discounted the "nick" of the "n" clash because Leroy was not listing such minor clashed letters at the time as I had learned and been "spanked" by Leroy in the past for trying to get such things listed.

But I had to point out to both the submitter and Leroy that they overlooked the "rust" at BU. So the VAM-13A was delisted and named the new VAM-23B.

So both the submitter and Leroy missed the basic PUP of this die pair.

By the way, this is how listings get messed up. There is no VAM-23A now. All of them are now VAM-23B because any coin with the "rust" at BU is also clashed with the nick of the "n".

Great discussion guys!

Scott, I want to tackle 81s as my first die study but I have no idea where to start, especially with a beast of a date like 81s. Maybe you can be my sherpa :)
