OT-IKE-NEW Triple Letter Transfer 1976 P Type 2

Post by RogerRock » Sun Apr 21, 2019 4:04 pm

Atypical unabraded rotated clashed dies with transferred letters "D WE" on reverse. Obverse partial mirror brockage from
intrusion of off center (no reeding) planchet that is smaller than an IKE$ planchet. Rotated reverse 100 degrees CCW.
I wanted to share this significant new transferred letter IKE variety/error with everyone at VAMWORLD.

i have pictures of another coin from this same die with the rotated multi clashed die struck through a large square fragment. it may take some digging, the picture is probably 5 years old and I have taken lots of pictures since then.

Brian, you don't have to code in the new VW 2.0. Below the dialog box is a tab for 'attachments'. Click on that and find the picture on your puter. Insert/add and your done...

You can even click the 'preview' button and see what it looks like before you click 'submit'...

Brian, this is the PCGS specimen that I showcased with you at the Raleigh Coin Show Expo several years ago !!
Gold Shield PCGS 1976 $1 MS 63 20% Indented + Clash Dies 90 degree Rotated Dies CW 03817889
The clashed die markers are very similar on both the PCGS and NGC specimen.

That is too cool! I haven't tried it on the pages, but for threads you really can just drag and drop a photo

Wow. That coin is a hot mess. It looks like the brockage maker was an off-center Ike. It would be interesting to see if there are any normal strikes made with these dies after all the clashing, but I imagine that when this error happened and was cleared, the clashed dies were trashed.

JB- In fact, there are three (at least) specimen that exist with these clashed dies.
One specimen that I traded several years ago is pictured on The Ike Group forum under "Bell Clash 1976-D Type II"
heading with reply post Brian Vaile Sunday Aug 21 2016. 1976$ PCGS MS64 50 degree CCW Rotated Dies Clashed Dies
Obv & Rev 03817890 (PHOTO) reholdered into ANACS 1976$ Var 2 Clash 5X from rotated dies Rotated Dies 50degrees
CCW MS64 John Roberts is referenced by Brian Vaile with request to label with Clash 5X

The first PCGS specimen MS 63 20% indented obverse 90 degree CW Rotated Dies Clashed Dies 03817889
was struck by the same clashed dies. I showcased this specimen with Vamsterdam several years ago at the Raleigh
Coin Show Expo. Both of the PCGS specimen were raw submissions that I sent years ago...

The radius of the brockage zone does not match an IKE$ planchet. Comparison overlay with IKE$,half$, and quarter$
coin revealed a very close match with the half$. Another comparison measurement was done by tracing the curvature
of the brockage edge on paper over an enlarged image (computer) and then tracing the the curvature of the IKE$
edge at the same exact enlagement. Cutouts of both curved edges were made with the same length for comparison.
Every comparison showed a significantly reduced edge signature at the (no reeding) brockage perimeter.
