Elusive 1878 C reverses

Post by mark » Thu Mar 21, 2019 12:36 am

I can pretty much identify most 1878 A and B reverses within seconds. It's the C reverses that I am really still learning. I've been searching for a regular VAM-210 and have consistently come up empty. Never see any listed anywhere and haven't come across one in any auction houses or online dealers.

Finally a few days ago a new listing popped up on eBay and within minutes of it being posted I hit the buy it now button. The coin was raw, but pictures were good, coin looked good in said pictures and I was 100% confident I found the elusive VAM-210. Not only that but appears the coin should grade PL. There are some light abrasions on the obverse so the coin could grade AU58, MS62PL or something in between.

Also thanks to another member I was able to pick up two more extremely elusive C reverses.. VAM-221-3 and 227-2.

The new additions will put me over 90% of the basic 1878 set and inching closer to hitting my goal this year of 90% of all 1878p varieties.

I used to avoid C reverses. Much easier to identify A & B reverses. The pick ups for C reverses are sometimes impossible to see in online pics..

Also recently picked up a raw 228.5 on eBay. Should grade AU55/58. Noticed the tiny scratch in the hair and took a chance and was rewarded.

Still plugging away, one coin at a time.

I picked a raw 229-1 off the bay last week, plan to send it to JB for the
bulk pcgs submission soon.

The C set is tough and often the makers are subtle. Good job on the 228.5! Glad to see there is another 78-P nut out there!
